BaaGaDin Bangkok (or Baa Ga Din) brings Thai street food to the next level with a posh/casual restaurant in Sukhumvit. BaaGaDin restaurant is beautifully designed with both an indoor and an outdoor dining area. While the restaurant is resolutely trendy and modern, many ‘street’ touches have been added to keep the street spirit: metal chairs, local restaurants table and a lot of little objects that contrast with the design. The back wall is even decorated with mysteriously carved and painted numbers… but locals know (or if you ask) that you can guess the next lottery wining numbers from them.

The food at BaaGaDin is fun and creative, from American chef Chandler Schultz and Chef Ton from the now famous Le Du Restaurant in Silom. Baa Ga Din is actually the thin mattress used to sell street food. If you are familiar with Thai street food you will of course recognize most of the names but you might not recognize the dish once on your plate (street food doesn’t always use plates anyway).  It’s always superbly presented and very photogenic. Taste is intense with a strong character and some of the dishes can be really spicy, even for Thai!

The bartender is very skilled and creative, so have some fun and order one of the fun cocktails on the list. Many are unusual and come with a Thai touch: peppercorn, basil, rosemary or even chili! Cocktails range around 300 – 350 baht and just like the food, are beautifully presented. One of them even comes in a plastic bag with a straw in it,  the way drinks used to be served to you in the street if you had to walk away as you cannot take a glass bottle with you.

We ordered 4 dishes and 2 desserts and the amount was just right: A Banana blossom salad with river prawns (Yum Hua Plee 350 baht), a beef tartar (390 baht and yes that is street food!), a whole fish with a spicy lime sauce (690 baht), just remember that this one takes long to cook, so only order it if you are not in a rush. We ended with a delicious toasted coconut ice cream and of course to close with a real fun local touch: Ice cream sandwich with pandan brioche and marshmallow!

Dining at BaaGaDin is a fun journey, it pleases the eyes and the palate and the decor invite for a casual friendly experience. This is a great place to unwind with a bunch of good friends, just the way you would sit and laugh with your best friends t the local joint with a beer and food to share.
